Through King Chulalongkorn's Kingdom, 1904-1906 : the first botanical exploration of northern Thailand
Through KingChulalongkorn's Kingdom (1904-1906): The First Botanicla Exploration of Northern THailand is the report of a German expedition conducted by the indefatigable Dr. Carl Curt Hosseus to northern Siam in 1904-1906. The author, a botanist, aimed to explore the then still virgin forest stands and jungles in such mountainous regions as the Wang Chao area and the Khoa Phra Dang mountains of Tak province, the Mae Ping river valley, Doi suthep, Doi Inthanon, and Doi Chaing Doa in Chiang Mai province, Muang Fang, Chaing Sen and its ancient temples, the road from Chaing Sen to Chiang Rai, and the Huay Sai-Chiang Khong region on the Mekong. There were numerous discoveries made of new plant species, as could bee expected, and extensive commentary on local environments of vegetationassosiations. However, the author does notr stop here but offers interesting cultural insights from perspctive of an early twentieth cencury European observer. In particular, the author notes the various tribess in north such as the Shan and Mussoer, the former's insurrections against central rule, tha waning power of local rulers, the old local lords (chao), and the operations of large logging companies such as he East Asiatic Company. He also noted the destructin caused by forest fires, the working of American missionaries in the north, budding Ffrench administration in French Loas, the development of a modern-up country corps of gendarmes undeer Danish leadership, and the growing trade interests of Britain and Germany. This straightforward and detailed report shows us the problems associated with mounting anexpedition, even one with limited objectives, and an expedition with only oneforeigner. The local flavor of villages and towns is co;orfully described and illustrated with more thanninety magnificent period photographs.
