Venerable PanditWidurapola Piyatissa Maha Nayaka Thera was one of the eminent oriental scholars in Ceylon & one of the leading authoritis of Pali. He has commented on critical editions of Pali texts which show his deep understanding & keenness in Buddhism of the intricate language of Pali. Some of his original compilations, such as 'Mahanekkammachampu' written in Pali, show his deep awareness of Pali & his poetical ability.

The English Pali Dictionary by Rev. Piyatissa is a clear example of his intellectual acumen & the deep understanding & familiarity of the Pali language.

Pali language has remained static for ages, though other languages are advancing at a rapid pace. Therefore it is somewhat difficult to find equivalent words in Pali for words in English. This dictionary was compiled few decades back, in order to fill this gap. First printed in 1949, this was never reprinted. But with the new spark of interest in the Pali language Godage Publishing House has taken the initiative to reprint the book without any amendments. We sincerely hope that this will be of great aid for the students of Pali.
