In contemporary Thailand, new religious movements have arisen both within the Theravada Buddhist Sangha and outside the mainstream Thai Buddhist tradition. While new religious movements in Thai society have been a widespread topic of research in Western academia, very few Thai scholars have an academic interest in this area, particularly in the social milieu of "transplanted" new religious groups.
